DragonCon 2015: Photo Recap

I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I have in years past and some of these were taken by my pseudo-handler and water-carrier, cats_and_critical_hits. If you stumble on this page and see yourself, please send me a message so I can give you the wonderful credit you deserve for being awesome. I'll also include links to your page(s) or whatever if you want, just let me know! XOXOX

If you have burning questions about my crochet Sailor Saturn cosplay, check out the FAQ post.

Thursday night was pretty hoppin' so I put on Nisha to roam around and pick up my earrings from Eric (Southpaw Engraving, Jarman Props). Ran into a doge cosplay and died then we screwed around with Eric's kantus head. I forgot the earrings I was going to wear with Nisha so I decided to just use my Saturn earrings because they're so rad.

I did Nisha during the day as planned on Friday. Nisha ran into Antman. I made stupid faces and then we swapped headgear. Antman by Jareth Valentine (Ravengel Ringworks).

I also took a selfie with Felicia Day. She's cool. Meanwhile, I look ridiculous as per usual.

I got purple contacts for Saturn from CamoEyes and took a picture of myself in which I appear to have a lazy eye. I don't actually have a lazy eye...I don't think. Do I? Oh, noes. I was also giving out crochet Sailor Moon tiaras, which you can see on my own head and the head of my water-carrier in this other picture.

Sailor Saturn ran into everyone's favorite Inquisition diplomat, Josephine.

If you keep up with my incessant ramblings, you know I'm obsessed with Dragon Age. I was saddened by the lack of DA cosplays I'd run into (AKA the single Josephine), but then I met Cullen and Cassandra on the Marriott elevator on the way to the Borderlands photoshoot, which I have zero pictures from.

Then I went to the DA Developers Q&A panel, where there were DA cosplayers en masse, but I failed to take any pictures because I was so excited about everything else. I then attempted to make it to do a podcast with a dude (Rocket Props) from the BL photoshoot, but it took me 35 minutes to get from the Hilton to the Hyatt omg.

I couldn't conceivably make it to the Sailor Moon photoshoot, which was a bummer, but then I changed into Saturn and went to the aquarium to look at fishes. I entered the costume contest on a whim and did not succeed at it, but I looked at fishes. At some point I also totally blasted my ankle, but I won't bore you with a detailed tale of my pain.

I found this adorable Morrigan on Sunday (who I'd also run into in line for the DA Developers Q&A panel). I also stumbled upon a Doctor and Martha. I'd never seen a Martha before, so I got excited and by stumbled upon, I mean I was sitting and they were walking by.

Yay, DragonCon! I'm already excited for next year. Maybe I'll bring a fancy camera and spend some time taking good pictures of the numerous awesome humans I encounter.

Crocheted Sailor Saturn DragonCon FAQ

I enjoy answering questions.

I reblogged a thing on tumblr last week where I said something along the same lines. I'm not at all annoyed by genuine questions from interested parties, even if the questions are the same questions that have been asked before (this is especially true at an event like DragonCon - unless you were standing nearby, you didn't hear the answer, so it's totally ok to ask again). I'm really very mellow, but there were some people hanging around me that were making fun of the other people that were coming to talk to me - this was lame and that's not how I roll. I hope it didn't deter anyone.

So many people had questions and many were the same, valid questions. For those of you that missed me at DC or if you're just curious, but don't want to are the answers!

Q: Is that knit or crochet?
A: 100% crochet, even the incredibly tight stitches around my elbows. Those are just very tight single crochet.

Q: How long did it take?
A: I stopped keeping track at 400 hours.

Q: What made you want to crochet a Sailor Saturn cosplay?
A: I've wanted to do a Sailor suit since I was 14 and I've wanted to take a stab at crocheting a cosplay for about ten years - two birds with one stone. I chose Saturn because I think I look the most like Saturn and I also wanted to make a large crocheted weapon.

Q: Did you watch a lot of Netflix while you worked on it?
A: Yes.

Q: Are you hot or does it breathe?
A: I tried to make it breathe. It doesn't. It's a blanket.

Q: Are you going to crochet another cosplay?
A: Definitely.

Q: What is your next crochet cosplay going to be?
A: A secret until I do a little more planning to ensure that it's feasible.

Q: Did you make your earrings?
A: No. They were custom made by Southpaw Engraving. Eric is one of the coolest dudes I know (he's the Gears of War kantus in the photo above. In addition to making foam masterpieces, he also makes earrings, you see).

Many, many people came up to me and thanked me, which I found incredibly amusing. Other people just exclaimed various profanities at me with great enthusiasm - also amusing. I was on Felicia Day's snapchat and several people told me they follow me on tumblr. All of these things were awesome. I'm sure pictures of me making really stupid faces are going to start cropping up on the Internet, and this is cool too. Everything is awesome.

I have a whole stack of business cards to sort through and people to attempt to connect with. Hopefully I'll be getting to that in the next few days. I've got a major case of the infamous ConCrud and I somehow destroyed my right foot at the aquarium on Saturday night. Everything is still awesome.

Find me on Facebook and Etsy!

Photo cred to Laura (cats_and_critical_hits) because I took zero decent pictures of myself over the weekend, apparently.

Last-Minute DragonConning - Destiny Hunter Cosplay WIP

Having finished my two DragonCon cosplays with some weeks to spare apparently made me look very available to help someone mere days before we leave for Atlanta. There won't be a free knitting or crochet pattern this week, pals - because I have been spending every waking hour working on someone else's costume - a hunter from Destiny.

Thankfully, she had fabricated most everything already and just brought it over. She also had a (horribly made) gun molded, which I'll rant about in a later post. My job has largely been painting, which is something I enjoy. I also sewed a cloak. I don't enjoy sewing, but I'm pleased enough with it. I've been watching Project Runway, which has instilled me with confidence? I did some draping shit, which looks alright.

Today, because we have reached the eleventh hour, I've been doing assembly of some of the pieces and still painting. Painting. Painting. I may or may not have put more work into her costume than she did at this point. lololol

I'm not complaining! I'm making jokes. I really enjoy assorted crafting and this has been a lot of fun. I unfortunately had plans to play video games and be lazy, but nevermind that! I wish she had approached me sooner so I could have gone about all of this at the leisurely pace I prefer when costuming, so that I could still waste time playing video games and write better blog posts than this one. Plus if I had more time it would also be even more

The color scheme she wanted isn't a color scheme at all. I worked with her specifications, which varied a bit from what I would have done personally. My OCD doesn't like when things don't match and I'm also a big fan of making completed armor sets - not bits and pieces of different gear. But it's what she wanted! Everything still looks pretty cool. And I wouldn't have chosen to do the Mantle of Gheleon at all. Honestly, I would have done a warlock instead of a hunter. lulz

Pictures! Most are WIP shots. I'll get some complete shots when we're there and write-up some more details for those of you that care. You all know I love cell-shading, but I tried to tone it down since Destiny isn't Borderlands.

And remember, friends: Nisha during the day and Sailor Saturn at night! Friday night I'll be handler for Jarman Props' glorious foam kantus - come say hi to both of us! I may also be giving out crocheted Sailor Moon tiaras (while supplies last). *wink wink*

Happy making shit! Enjoy Labor Day, my fellow 'Merricans, etc. etc.
